The UK requires the education sector to play its role in positively responding to Climate Change, shaping young minds and their behaviours. However, currently there is a lack of education and guidance within schools on Climate Change and sustainability.

At Huntingdonshire District Council, we acknowledge that schools have an important part to play in being able to meet the Net Zero targets for 2050 but are under increased pressure for deliverables. In December 2023, we teamed up with PECT, an environmental charity that has been working with schools in environmental education for the last 25 years, to create a Climate Education pilot project. The Climate Education scheme will mean that PECT will collaboratively work with teachers and pupils to embed sustainability into schools, with PECT providing support in-person and via the Climate Education one stop Green Hub - Home - Climate Education. Funding has allowed us to help four schools across the district.

The long-term vision of the project is to offer the chance for every child to gain that initial understanding of what climate change and sustainability is, and how we all need to make changes and work together to create a better future for our planet. We have begun working towards this goal with our Climate Education pilot project.
